Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology Training Available at UNM Hospital

We have been approved for an Independent Interventional Radiology Residency program by the ACGME.  In addition, we have been approved for one ESIR position per year in our Advanced residency program.

The University of New Mexico Radiology Department provides robust Interventional Radiology experience to its Diagnostic Radiology residents and Interventional Radiology fellows, with the most advanced interventional therapies in the state. Our Interventional Radiology (IR) services support our NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center (the highest designation achievable) and Level I Trauma service (at the only Level I Trauma Center in New Mexico).

The UNM Radiology Department maintains a busy Interventional Radiology service, providing care to both inpatients and outpatients at UNM Hospital.  Our physician staff includes 8 subspecialty-trained Interventional Radiologists, a Neurointerventional Radiologist and Neurosurgeons who perform Neurointerventional procedures, along with Nurse Practitioners who perform image-guided vascular access and consultations.  Procedures performed at our institution span the spectrum of IR, including advanced cancer therapeutics.

In addition, our hospital system has recently opened an IR service at our branch facility, the Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC), which is staffed daily by one of our IR faculty.  In any given day, typically 3-4 procedure rooms operate simultaneously at UNMH, with 1 at SRMC.  We maintain a busy on-call service at the main hospital, with emergent IR on-call coverage provided 24/7 by IR faculty and nursing/technologist staff in conjunction with a DR resident or IR fellow.
